1 Title:   South Georgia Civil Rights Oral History Collection  Requires cookie*
  Creator:   Wall, James
  Dates:   2017
  Contents:
Oral histories with members of the Albany Movement's civil rights campaign in southwest Georgia document that time period as well as the local politics and initiatives in its aftermath. "In November 1961, residents of Albany, Georgia, launched an ambitious campaign to eliminate segregation in all facets of local life. The movement captured national attention one month later when local leaders invited Martin Luther King, Jr. to join the protest. Despite King's involvement, the movement failed to secure concessions from local officials and was consequently deemed unsuccessful by many observers. Subsequent appraisals, however, have identified the movement as a formative learning experience for King and other civil rights organizers, and credited it with hastening the ultimate desegregation of Albany's facilities, which occurred only one year following the movement's conclusion in August 1962." -- Civil Rights Digital Library

The Walter A. Lundy Files, Red and Black (Fall 1953) Integration Issue Papers consist of correspondence, clippings and printed materials. The materials document the response on both local and national levels to the dispute between Walter Lundy and Bill Shipp, editor and managing editor of the Red and Black, the student paper of the University of Georgia, and the Board of Regents of the University System led by Roy V. Harris. The debate concerned Lundy and Shipp's statements in two editorial columns advocating the end of racial segregation in Georgia's public schools. The majority of the correspondents support Lundy and Shipp for their position on segregation while others who do not favor the editors' proposals, decry efforts by Harris and the University of Georgia to proscribe the newspaper's control over its editorial content. Many of the letters and newsclipping come from other student newspapers across the country.

19 Title:   Janet B. Scarborough Merritt Papers  Requires cookie*
Creator:   Merritt, Janet B. Scarborough, 1909-2000.
  Dates:   1900-2011
  Contents:
Janet B. Scarborough Merritt was elected to represent the Sumter County (at the time, the 68th district) in the Georgia State House in 1964. The only woman in the Georgia State House of Representatives when she was elected, and the first to represent Sumter County, Merritt called herself a "full-time" representative. The topic of the role of women in government is thoroughly documented throughout Merritt's speeches and writings. She served four terms in that position: she was elected again in 1966, in 1968 (after reapportionment combined Sumter with Macon and Schley counties into the new 46th district), and in 1970. In 1972, after a second reapportionment, Merritt was defeated for re-election by her former colleague in the House, Oliver Oxford, in a run-off. Merritt ran against Oxford a second time in the 1974 election, but was again narrowly defeated in a run-off. The collection documents Merritt's campaigns, her time in the state legislature and her community activities including heavy involvement in the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) Of particular note are materials documenting Merritt's ongoing battle to change Georgia's state flag. In 1969, Merritt sponsored a bill to change the Georgia flag adopted in 1955, shortly after the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling, back to the 1879 version, which did not include the Confederate battle flag. Included in the collection are speeches, notes, journals, correspondence, clippings, photographs, artifacts, and audiovisual material.
